Our Aviary

We raise Parrots such as: Caiques, Cockatiels, Sun Conures, Green Cheek Conures, English Budgies for those who would love the companionship and intelligence of these Exotic Birds. We will be adding carefully selected Amazons and the colorful Rosie Bourke to our available companion birds.  We provide training, socialization, and a healthy start for these amazing creatures that provide years of companionship and quality friendship to their human companions/caretakers.  Years of research have gone into the way we raise our birds.  The best start makes a well-rounded and adaptable companion pet that will remain free from behavior concerns and problems.

While all birds are beautiful to look at, not all are lovely to own.  We at Denny’s can guide you toward the best fit for you, your family and your needs.  For example: Some of our nursing home clients prefer a beautiful-to-look-at-but-not-to-hold bird.  For those who are looking for a quieter companion to feed and care for while not necessarily sturdy enough to hold, we recommend canaries, finches, budgies or parakeets and Rosie Bourkes.  Of course, for a lovely song, everyone usually thinks of the Canary.  But the Rosie Bourke has a remarkably melodious call, as do some cockatiels.  We know our birds and their personalities.

Other clients just down the hall are in need of a sturdier bird.  One that is not as fragile.  There are such friendly and fearless pet bird wonders that are not afraid of the occasional reflexive spasm or loud yell.  These would be the White Bellied Caiques.  Active and fearless their curiosity keeps them coming back for more.  These are non-stop birds that spin and beak surf, they are found rolling on their backs on the floor or in my hand.  Put two together and you have a free for all that tears everyone away from the TV set.  Sometimes it reminds me of Professional Wrestling!  While they can fly, Caiques prefer short choppy flying.  This keeps them usually in reach and they don’t fly far.  They tend to be uncoordinated or just don’t care to be graceful; I’m not sure which because they truly act like Circus clowns, tumbling and diving into everything.  Although Caiques are not noted for their talking ability.  They do talk and if you care to sit closely they talk very well.  My caique, Harvey, not only asks me “How are you?” But mumbles under his breath when I don’t immediately respond to his appropriately posed question.  He tells me that “I’m expensive” and “I love you.”  He will meow and purrs like a cat although we have never had any since he’s come to live with us.  I think he picked that up as he looked out the window.  He will whistle when I tell him “Robbie is coming to visit” because he adores my Son-in-law.  Harvey loves everyone and none of the Caiques are shy.  Anywhere that lots of people are in and out would be great for a Caique.

If you have a need for more size and better talk ability than I suggest an African Grey.  Quiet and reflective they often prefer one person to several.  They possess amazing intelligence and loyalty.  They are long-lived as are most birds so a young family is best.  However, given time and patience many older birds can be re-homed and will adapt to different surroundings.  I prefer the older birds.  They seem calmer and more willing to adapt and respond to gentleness and love.  They need lots of room so cage space will help them remain happy.

Amazons are way up on my list of favorites.  They talk, they dance, they have a need for companionship, they love to please and although they tend to be one-person birds, mine have come to interact nicely with my whole family.  My Amazon Orange Wing, Joe is wonderful therapy. He was wild caught and, therefore is at least 16. He’s had at least two other homes before he came to his last home with us.  He makes steady eye contact when he talks to you.  You just feel the wisdom.  He is regal and elegant.  My heart melts when he agrees to take a peanut from my hand.  Each little victory is so precious to me.  It makes the pain of any condition tolerable and forgettable for a while.

Did you know that to stay healthy, a person needs at least 8 hugs a day.  Imagine having the soft feathers of a gentle little bird to hug and snuggle.  The all time cuddly snuggly huggy birds have got to be either the Sun Conures or the cockatiels.  We hand feed all babies from day 10 right up to abundance weaning and they all come when called.  Several of my personal pets will stand in line and will come when I call their specific name for their treat.  Such love and dependence on their flock boss (me) makes for lasting friends and good companions.  The Suns, after trimming wings, will garden outside with me.  We have 8 and the neighborhood kids love to peak around the corner to see them all out there with me.  A couple of the neighborhood kids are brave enough to ask if they can pet them.  OF COURSE you can!  My Suns have even been to church where they are petted and held by the children.  Even the drums on the worship team don’t bother them.  The Suns LOVE the kids.  The little kids insist on calling the Lutino cockatiels “chickens” but who cares.  They learn “tiel” quickly enough when I ask, “do you want to hold the cock a TIEL?”  Such joy and laughter.  Another Sun went to an 8th grade teacher who takes hers to school.  All the colors of the rainbow are in the feathers of an adult Sun and the wondrous transformation from baby to adult feather is amazing.  So, even the eyes are stimulated therapeutically.  Suns and cockatiels are smaller so are much less intimidating.  While many consider the Conures to be louder, I’ve found that when properly socialized they are very quiet.  Francis will give the occasional squawk that announces “Mom’s coming up the hall, don’t be afraid.” But not much more and he’s a re-homed bird because he was loud there.  Here at Denny’s Aquascapes and Aviary, we manage our flock.  We try to meet the needs of our birds and their babies so that they can, in turn, meet your needs and desires while living up to your expectations. You, too, can be a “flock boss” to your very own companion pet bird.  Therapy works for humans AND birds so everyone benefits.

Denny’s Aquascapes and Aviary has had many successes re-homing older birds.  Although we do raise, train, and provide babies for those special people who want and need them, we are enthusiastic supporters of those who wish to adopt an older bird.  Denny’s has adopted several older birds who will stay with us forever.  We don’t resell our older birds believing that there are enough other birds that need patient homes.  We have several articles on Behavior Problems encountered and solutions to these problems.  Some of our links provide help as well.  As always, our Certified Avian Specialist is on call and can be reached by phone or email sales@dennysaquascapes to give advice.  Of course, we ask that you consult your local Avian Vet as all-to-often, behavior problems stem from health issues.  Only your Avian Vet can help you with these medical concerns.  Preferring to prevent problems before they occur, Denny’s Aquascapes and Aviary feeds only the healthiest feeds containing complete nutrition such as Zupreem, Roudybush, Higgins, fresh and dried fruits and veggies.
